First novel in a three-part series by R.M. Dolin
What Is To Be Done – SUMMARY
Jake’s not a rebel any more than a recluse but after Emelia’s tragic death he only leaves home to play poker with former colleagues calling themselves, the ‘Americans for a New America.’ The ANA seem like any other group of complaining old men except these resourceful intellectuals are plotting a virtual coup. Their quixotic quest gets interrupted when Sympatico, escaping human traffickers, seeks refuge in Armando’s bar. While coming to her rescue is never in question, Jake’s clueless about what to do with the aftermath.
He tries passing Sympatico off on Padre but rather than help, Padre insists Sympatico is Jake’s burden. Poorly equipped for this responsibility, Jake’s efforts fall short and are explosively misinterpreted. When Jake hires a Harley drifter hiding from his past, the smoldering chaos stirs. When the traffickers demand Sympatico back and the ANA realize their plot’s been discovered by government Watchers, all plans are off the rails.
In book two of the trilogy, “Trophic Cascade – The Rise and Fall of Quiet Acquiescence,” the story picks up with Sympatico missing and a worry she could be the murdered woman at Miguel’s ranch.
