Whispered Laughter
At first it was fear
I thought I saw,
before believing
it’s only trepid hesitation.
With the passing of time
I’m forced to find,
as painful as it is,
leaving is what’s
really in your eyes,
stealing away
in carefully considered glances
like whispered laughter
on the tentative lips of a lonely wanderer
caught in the open
as a high mountain storm
thunders in unrelenting intensity.
From the R.M. Dolin novel, “An Unsustainable Life – The Book of Issac,” Issac misses Gabriela, his heart wants to understand her decision even though he knows it won’t change outcomes or unburden his sadness. He was fine in the moment she chose not to follow him to New Mexico because in his ne’er-do-well arrogance he didn’t sufficiently respect her or their relationship. Inheriting the responsibilities of Darwin’s self-sustaining life, however, is forcing Issac to reassess what it means to love someone while accepting all the things too harsh for Gabriela to say.
