I’m not dodging the question you delivered
with crystal clarity, my hesitation
stutters at the profound appreciation
for the seriousness of each and every implication
you’ve littered along the jagged highway
of my life. I should know the answer.
A person doesn't get to be me
without having thought this through.
Do not discount the power of fear
as it relates to love,
or the incomplete possibility
you may not really exist; at least not in
the life that’s meant for me.
If one side of a coin represents love,
and the other side loneliness,
and fate decides to flip for my fortune,
I’ll bury the coin in my pocket without looking.
Sometimes, the most profound kind of love
goes unexamined, like the clarity of questions
that go unanswered.
Background poem for the novel, “The Dangling Conversation.” Isabelle wonders how to get past her trepidation and trust in love.
