I stare into the frigid
darkness of night
a shadow of what once was,
devoid of knowing
what to do
in the aftermath
of all that’s been taken,
the little that remains.
You will always be
my prelude to a touch.
From the R.M. Dolin novel, “What Is to Be Done.” Jake sits in the still quiet of his predawn room waiting for Emelia’s alarm to sound so he can start his day. Since her passing, Jake’s lost in a world he feels he no longer belongs but needs to hear that alarm so he can feel a necessary connection to Emelia.
