It's awkwardly painful
having to hide our love
until at least
those reasons
that seem so constraining
no longer matter.
I anticipate that moment
with the eagerness
of a high desert flower
waiting for rain.
It’s easy to find someone
to be with every day,
someone who’ll love me
openly and unafraid,
but I don’t want anyone
but you,
no matter who they are,
or how they love,
they can never be you,
or replace you.
Background poem for the novel, “The Dangling Conversation.” Kyle is unwilling to accept his relationship with Nadia is really over.
