This all began with hope and passion,
a fool's form of courage.
Nothing more than a daydreaming
boy content with the too few coins
rattling in his pocket,
confined to live in grown-up clothes
that never really fit.
I'm not a long-term bet,
on that we should agree.
Even so, watching the desert storm
encase me in darkening fog
like a snake in need of one more taste,
I stare deep into the infinity of nothing
wondering if it could be destiny
tugging on my soul.
Background poem for the yet to be started novel, “An Unsustainable Life.” Issac spends his first night at his Uncle’s wilderness farm feeling an unfamiliar call to nature that he does not yet know is his soul finding home. He begins awkwardly questioning the need to trade his ne’er-do-well life for something more meaningful and profound.
