Darkness in Our Distance

My greatest fear is
letting you have
my heart to break.
A part of me believes
love only exists when
two people agree
not to fall in love.
The rest of me wonders
why we're so damn convinced
purpose even matters.

From the darkness of our distance,
inside a cloud of cascading consequence,
past all the mistakes paving
a meaningless life,
lays a reflection I struggle to recognize,
one content to the float
through each day
ignoring the realties encasing it.
