Poem by R.M. Dolin, September 7, 2025
Breathe
Breathe. . .
How strange
to be reminded
about the uniquely odd way
I have to
remind myself
of things
I otherwise forget.
The sane thing is,
dear one,
only you can save me.
Only I keep forgetting,
you don’t love me anymore.
From the R. M. Dolin novel, “An Unsustainable Life – The Book of Issac.” Issac’s lost, there’s simply no other way to frame it. He spent the day toiling through chores that never end and besides being tired, achy, and sore, he emotionally feels like Icarus. The Icarus part is a consequence of what happens having too much time alone with thoughts. He emailed Gabriela earlier in the day then allowed his mind to build better outcomes. Now, after flying too close to the sun, he has her devastating reply, which leaves him questioning the value of love and if it even ever could really exist in the profound way his heart desires.
Composed while tiling the stairway leading from my garage to my writing room; a day spent alone with my thoughts contemplating the existence of profound love as it relates to hearts foolish enough to forgo the fecklessness of fate.
