Companion poem for chapter 19 of the R.M. Dolin novel, "What Is to Be Done"
Read chapter
Stillness at dawn,
like quietness in snow,
elevates the soul
for things unsettled.
Frustrations so deep
they can't be isolated.
Those who fear,
drink to forget.
Those with loss
drink to remember.
Men build their life’s mosaic on
scars caused by both.
Bourbon embraces
the finality of our past,
accepts right now with dignity,
and possesses the courage to
alter events long ago cast
by forces too powerful
to overcome.
Like life,
bourbon needs
to be experienced straight on
and undiluted.
From the R.M. Dolin novel, “What Is to Be Done.” It’s interview day for Jake’s assistant distiller position. He quickly dispatches his first interviewee after being insulted. Then, Chance rattles in on his Shovelhead Harley looking every bit the drifter, not knowing that asking for tasting is too tantamount to interviewing for a job.
