SUBJECT: Query: AN UNSUSTAINABLE LIFE – The Book of Issac
Dear Mr. :
Sometimes you must break the boy to build a man. I am seeking representation for my novel, AN UNSUSTAINABLE LIFE – The Book of Issac. After his dad dies in a plane crash when he’s ten and his mom dies from a slowly progressing cancer during his third year at Northwestern, it leaves Issac unprepared for the rigors, discipline, and responsibilities of adulthood, which is why he descends into his ne’er-do-well trust-fund life.
When his trust fund is frozen, Gabriella dumps him and he’s forced to work full time for Murphy at his Northshore Bar. Slowly Issac builds a community of coworkers, including Patrick, a pirate chef who uses Murphy’s kitchen and Lenny, who went to high school with Issac’s Uncle Darwin. Issac meets Sara, a chef-in-training at the Chicago Four Seasons and falls in love. When Darwin dies and Sara is transferred, Issac is in free fall. To console him, Murphy tells yarns, Patrick makes food, and Lenny insists he go to New Mexico to settle Darwin’s affairs.
Issac is greeted in Santa Fe by Anna, Darwin’s grieving girlfriend. Piecemeal Issac learns about Darwin’s off-grid self-sustainable life; including his clandestine collaboration with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs engaged in efforts to save humanity from technology’s existential threats, including the growing influence of Information Oligarchs, the coming AI revolution, and society’s willingness to trade freedom for convenience. Issac meets Camille, a determined French idealist who awakens him to the realization his ne’er-do-well life is unsustainable.
AN UNSUSTAINABLE LIFE is one story told from two perspectives. THE BOOK OF DARWIN is a journey of redemption as Darwin atones for his role in humanity’s demise while THE BOOK OF ISSAC is a journey of awakening as Issac reluctantly takes up his uncle’s mantel and discovers the burdens associated with leading a purpose-driven life.
As a former research engineer at the Los Alamos National Laboratory focused on Truth & Trust; primarily as it relates to information and digitally controlled processes, I am qualified to write this story. In addition to publishing over 100 technical papers, I have written five novels, two nonfiction books, one cookbook, and a plethora of poems. My novel writing method is to use poetry for character development and as a springboard for storytelling, in that sense, it is possible to enjoy my stories in both novel and poetry form.
Thank you for considering, AN UNSUSTAINABLE LIFE – The Book of Issac. The full manuscript is available upon request, but you can also peruse my novels, books, and poetry online at rmdolin.com. I look forward to your response and to establishing a long-term partnership. Per your submission guidelines, I have. . .
Respectfully
