Restlessness of water,
like sun racing toward distant horizons,
makes no claim on being kind.
Nothing burns brighter than a smile
or extinguishes with greater sadness,
which is why I dare not look deeply
in your eyes. Truth once hidden
grows cold and grey in darkening despair
yet my soul is made for staying.
Like water at the fall,
tranquility lays defenseless against
gravity's pull to any course not my own,
every twist and turn fraught with reasons
that remain the finality of facing
my greatest pain, needing you
now more than ever as you once again
have my heart to break.
Background poem for the novel, “The Dangling Conversation.” As darkness and despair deepen, Kyle needs Nadia in his life.
