First novel of a two-part story by R.M. Dolin
Query: An Unsustainable Life – The Book of Darwin
Dear M. :
What if what you broke was humanity itself, how far would you go to make amends? I am seeking representation for my novel, AN UNSUSTAINABLE LIFE – The Book of Darwin, complete at 93,000 words. Darwin is a former Silicon Valley entrepreneur on a journey of atonement as he confronts the most existential topic of our time; society’s irrevocable willingness to trade freedom for convenience in the information age. The story provides readers with a glimpse behind the curtain of a world they unwittingly allow to control them.
Darwin owns a successful startup in the early dot.com days whose mission statement is science serving society. He’s burdened by his ability to see with clear clairvoyance, the catastrophic cliff technology is herding humanity toward, which is why when his startup is deceptively sold to the Chinese military, he’s overwrought with guilt. Darwin decides a necessary step toward atonement is to isolate himself in the New Mexico wilderness away from technology’s temptations. He’s making progress on his penance until Tien, his former protégé, needs help fixing the mess she made trying to fix the mess he made. In helping Tien, Darwin is drawn back into the technology world where he reunites with old cohorts concerned about the growing influence of Information Oligarchs and the coming AI revolution.
As a former research engineer at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, focused on Truth & Trust; primarily as it relates to information and digitally controlled processes, I am qualified to tell this story. In addition to publishing over 100 technical papers, I have written five novels, two nonfiction books, one cookbook, and a plethora of poems. My novel writing method is to use poetry for character development and as a springboard for storytelling, in that sense, it is possible to enjoy my stories in both novel and poetry form. Thank you for considering, AN UNSUSTAINABLE LIFE – The Book of Darwin, The full manuscript is available upon request, but you can also peruse my novels, books, and poetry online at rmdolin.com. I look forward to your response and to establishing a long-term partnership. Per your submission guidelines, I have. . . .
Respectfully,
