Poem by R.M. Dolin, August 16, 2025
Sazeracs at Sunset
Alone,
solemnly sipping Sazeracs
as del Sol subtly slips
below the silhouetted slopes of
my wilderness mountain
in a universal sign it’s time
once again to
re-evaluate life choices.
I do not regret the risk I took
loving you unafraid
even with outcomes cast
in realities I’d rather not imagine.
Given the chance,
I’d roll roulette one more time if
it maybe meant I might see you again.
It is off course possible to move on
if you want to argue all this from
a pragmatic position
but show me a heart beating to that rhythm
and I’ll tell you about
the denied cost of never being in love.
It’s a multilayered fallacy,
the way we dance with strangers
in a vain attempt to pretend
it’s possible for a broken heart
to ever again beat in joyful syncopation
with anything other than its other part.
From the R.M. Dolin novel, “An Unsustainable Life – Book of Issac.” Issac is early in his journey toward becoming a man of character and substance, and the first step is admitting his flaws, mistakes, and the limitations of where he’s at now and what he’s capable of providing.
Written while wilderness camping in southern Colorado.
