From the R.M. Dolin novel, “The Dangling Conversation.”
Chapter 21: It Matters How Things End
Thank you for reading my novel and making it to the end. As a writer there is no greater reward than having others enjoy your stories. That being said, If you want to know how this story ends, ya gotta give me $1M. . . a guy’s gotta eat and good whiskey is expensive.
Or, you can be like me and never read the last chapter of a novel. Think about it, until I tell you how Nadia responds to Kyle’s plea for clarity, if she even does, and the choice Isabelle makes between Henry and Sergio, an infinite number of outcomes exist. Once I reveal my ending though, its only one outcome that exists. It’s kind of like the Taoist uncarved block analogy.
We all want a happy ending where old cowboys like Kyle ride off into the sunset with the girl of their dreams and the reason we read novels is to allow their fantasy to be an escape from real reality, but is that being honest to the story or is it just me selling out to prescripted formats?
How do you think I wrote the ending? It’s an interesting question and your answer not only says everything about how you see me, it also says a lot about how you see yourself. . .
Thank you for the opportunity to spend time together, let me know how you answered my question.
