Poem by R.M. Dolin
Forever Only
His only comfort
that desperately dark night
is the necessary way
she stays by his side.
There’s an unmatched intimacy
in having someone
who matters in your moment
of deepest despair,
someone who knows
the comfort of silence,
the reassuring touch of their hand,
the gentle kindness in their eyes,
the tender presence of their soul
letting you know
goodness follows turmoil.
In the moonlight cast
by soiled sadness,
in the silence of words
yet to be invented,
he knows
she’s no longer one of many
but his forever only.
From chapter 20 of the R.M. Dolin novel, “An Unsustainable Life – The Book of Darwin.” As Darwin drives to Albuquerque to meet Basia, he relives the night he frantically races down Taos Canyon in a desperate attempt to be in Chicago before Issac and Ilene learn of Vincent’s death. Anna is with him and her silent strength is the only thing holding him together. In the darkness of Taos Canyon with the bright New Mexico moon casting shades of sadness on his shattered world Darwin sees how much Anna has come to mean to him.
