Poem by R.M. Dolin, June 20, 2025
Caught In the Rain
I’ve become a clownish
metaphor of my own malaise,
forced to smile while skirting
wind swept puddles
on ancient cobblestones
that once walked me home.
The mask I wear
runs from an uncaring rain
in rivulets of sad uncertainty
like tears from heaven
exposing sins,
leaving little room to consider consequence,
causing me to wonder
what the hell God wants
and what I’m supposed to do.
From the R.M. Dolin novel, “An Unsustainable Life – The Book of Darwin.” Darwin arrives in Chicago having left is life, his love, and everything he’s worked for in California. He needs to figure out what to do now and while he hasn’t a clue, he’s convinced his brother Vincent will, he always does. Darwin made the decision to escape Silicon Valley and the troubling temptations of technology without fully assessing consequence, including Becky’s decision not to follow. He made a fortune selling software to Big Pharma but so what, and now what? Darwin isn’t good with uncertainty but knows the world’s changing too rapidly and depending too much on technology for things to end well, especially with his talented colleagues’ lusting after the elusive lure of artificial intelligence. He can’t be a catalyst for humanity’s decline but doesn’t have the fortitude to be the solution….if such a solution even ever could exist now that Pandora’s Box is opened.
