Anna Knows
Anna knows he is, for her, a complete man
she will never know
because men like him don’t exist,
how can they
when the burdens of his world cruelly crush
the soul of anyone daring to decide
everything doesn’t have to be,
as everything is forced to be.
That is why Anna knows
he needs her,
and why she knows
he will push her away
because men like him
foolishly believe
the dragons they must slay,
must slayed alone.
And Anna knows,
she must let him.
From the R.M. Dolin novel, “An Unsustainable Life – The Book of Darwin.” Anna isn’t ready to say she’s in love with Darwin because she’s not really sure who he is. She can, however, admit to herself how she sees him and her admiration for the way he struggles to deal with a past he’s yet to let go of. Unlike Gwen who cowered in fear when Darwin exposed his demons down to the darkest depths of his soul where even Dante feared to venture, Anna’s able to compassionately stare into his abyss even while accepting the journey Darwin travels is one he must endure alone.
