Competing With Ghosts
We all have someone from our past,
someone who should have been,
who maybe might still be,
someone we catch glimpses of
on a crowded Metro
or pensively hope
will sit down across the table
each time we’re alone
at a sidewalk café.
The one who visits in dreams
we dare not share with
the person beside us,
the person accepting us with
the understanding
they’re competing with a ghost.
It’s then we realize
the extent to which
everything is nothing.
From chapter 3 of the R.M. Dolin novel, “The Dangling Conversation.” Kyle describes the extent to which everyone suffers from love.
