Poem by R.M. Dolin
The End Isn’t Always the End
The way through this morass
defines darkness,
stumbling and falling,
pushed by forces
even darker then the dark,
unseen, yet too present
to be dismissed.
Most of life is lived
as a solo journey yet we crave
someone by our side,
a small but meaningfully light,
tenacious and determined,
guiding our stillness until
diminished by the dark.
In the end there is
only the end,
but I get to decide about that.
From chapter 22 of the R.M. Dolin novel, “Trophic Cascade.” With Ramon’s operation dismantled, Padre starts the process of returning the girls to their homes utilizing the Mexican underground. He tells Jake that Sympatico needs to go as well, causing Jake to confront his feelings and what it means to lose her. Now that Sympatico is finally free, she chooses to stay and build a life working at the halfway house. The intense bond Jake and Sympatico share is something that can’t be broken.
