Sazon Seasoning

This Cuban/Mexican/South American spice is great on grilled foods such as chicken, steak, pork, and salmon, but is also a staple in many Latin cuisines. In specialty stores you can sometimes find this already mixed and sold in small packages, but usually you have to make it yourself. The only spice in Sazon that is not likely in your pantry is Annatto, but you can substitute turmeric and paprika if you’re in a bind. This mix will keep well as long as you keep it dry and takes about five minutes to make.

Ingredients

  • 1 TBL Ground Coriander
  • 1 TBL Ground Cumin
  • 1 TBL Ground Annatto – or 1.5 tsp turmeric and 1.5 tsp sweet paprika
  • 1 TBL Garlic Powder
  • 1 TBL Kosher Salt
  • 2 tsp Oregano
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 tsp Ground Black Pepper
  • 0.25 tsp Cayenne pepper – optional

Process

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and store in an air-tight container.

Note: So you know how to incorporate into recipes. ~1.5 tsp of your homemade version, equals on package of store bought Sazon.
